Vital Initiatives update - May 12, 2012
The Literacy Working Group has prepared a 'literacy assets' directory listing programs and services available to Lunenburg County residents. The directory is organized by age and life-cycle stage (from birth, to school years, to adulthood and working years, to retirement and senior years). We have participated in community school initiatives, such as the Small Schools Summit, the Petite Riviere School review response process, and the Schools Plus at Gold River-Western Shore Elementary School. We have shared information about the Canadian Bankers' Association free in-school seminar called 'Your Money', a financial literacy program for high school students. The Group has also undertaken an in-depth review of school achievement data. Dr. Rosalie Osmond, a member of the Literacy Group, is the author of "The Trouble with Education," an Op-Ed reflection piece about education and learning (see Chronicle Herald, May 12, 2012 http://thechronicleherald.ca/opinion/95627-the-trouble-with-education).
